Negative Space Still-Life Drawing

Space is an important element of art!
This video is a helppul reference for understanding space​ in art.

Space: The distance or areas around, between, or within objects in a piece of artwork.
Positive Space: The area of interest in the piece of artwork, the subject of the artwork.
Negative Space: The background or area around the subject of the artwork.

In this artwork the tree and ground is the positive space. The white space is the background/negative space.

Negative Space Still-Life Drawing Activity:

For this artwork you will look at one of three reference photos to create a piece of artwork that explores the relationship between positive and negative space.

1. Choose one of the three reference photos to draw from.

​2.Make a contour line drawing of the negative space in the photo.  To do this draw the outlines of the objects.  Ignore any details inside the objects.

3.Fill in the negative space with marker, paint, crayon, pencil, or the art material of your choice. Feel free to use patterns or colors.
